Top 10 things to do with kids in North West England

 

There is no shortage of fun and interesting things to do with the family in North West England and in no particular order we have listed the top 10 things to do come rain or shine in this wonderful part of the country.

1-Turbary Woods Owl and Bird of Prey Sanctuary

...in Preston is home to a unique collection of more than 90 birds of prey including falcons, owls, hawks and eagles as well as a few more unusual bird species.  This is a fabulous day out for all the family and well worth the small admission charge. Try to catch the flying displays which take place daily weather permitting.  Check the website for more details and times.  Do bear in mind Turbary Woods is run by volunteers and is non-profit making so all money raised from entry keeps the sanctuary open.  They don't accept credit or debit cards so make sure you take cash with you.

2-Merseyside Maritime Museum

...is a must-see for any visitor to Liverpool, giving a fascinating insight into the history of Liverpool docks - allow at least a couple of hours to see everything.  The museum is also home to the International Slavery Museum (on the 3rd floor) as well as the Border Force's national museum: Seized! The Border and Customs Uncovered (located in the basement)

3-The Museum of Science and Industry

...in Manchester is not only extremely interesting, but it is also FREE!  The museum is a great way to spend a rainy afternoon and there plenty of hands-on activities to keep the little ones amused.  As well as the hands-on exhibits there are plenty of displays which will keep the whole family entertained.

4-Tarn Hows and Coniston

...offer easy and accessible circular walks which are perfect for families.  For the less able, it is possible to book a Tramper mobility scooter. As well as the outstanding scenery there is the opportunity to see local wildlife and grazing cattle. Don't forget to take your camera because there are plenty of great photo opportunities too.

5- Wythenshawe Community Farm

...is a lovely little place situated next to the children's play area at Wythenshawe Park.  Entry to the farm is FREE and they have a good selection of animals including sheep, cows, pigs, goats and ducks and horses as well as a prize-winning herd of Hereford cattle.

6- Trencherfield Mill

As well as being a fascinating place to visit,  it's wonderful to see a piece of Wigan's industrial heritage so lovingly restored to its former glory.  Despite Trencherfield Mill Steam Engine being the world’s largest working horizontal triple expansion steam engine in its original location, it's still one of Wigan's best-kept secrets.

7- Haigh Woodland Park

...offers a great day out for all of the family.  If you have a head for heights challenge yourself with the Haigh high ropes course. Prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground?  No problem, there is an abundance of activities on offer including an 18 hole golf course, woodland walks, adventure golf, and new for 2016 the Haigh Hall Hotel which will feature a spa when opened. Feeling peckish? There is the Kitchen Courtyard or of course, you can always take your own picnic.

8- Quarry Bank Mill

...is a fantastic family day out and there is absolutely loads to see and do. It's more than likely you will go for a short visit and end up staying the whole day! The National Trust describes the mill as  'one of Britain's greatest industrial heritage sites, showing how a complete industrial community lived.'  Kids love it, adults love it,  what more is there to say? (This is Geoff's personal favourite!)

9- Chester Cathedral

A truly magnificent building and a haven from the hustle and bustle of the city.  Founded as a Benedictine abbey in 1092, once inside you can certainly feel the cathedral's rich and varied history. Facilities include a gift shop and a cafe which is housed in the thirteenth-century monk’s dining hall.

10- Astley Green Colliery Museum

...covers 15 acres and is seemingly frozen in a time warp.   This hidden gem is home to the Astley Green colliery which is the last remaining pithead in the area.  The museum also houses Lancashire's only surviving headgear and engine house, both of which have listed building status.
