Help Your Child To Learn Weekly Spellings

Does your child have weekly spellings to learn? Chances are high that if they're still at primary school they will. And is it a source of great joy, or of great pain? :)

If your heart sinks at the very thought of helping your child learn their weekly spellings, we have put together some fun games for you both. These will help support your child at home when they have spellings to learn.

It's important to make spelling practice enjoyable and remember "little and often" is usually the best approach, that goes for kids struggling with spellings or those who pick them up quickly.

While we wholeheartedly recommend the tried and tested "LOOK, SAY, COVER, WRITE, CHECK' approach, it's a little dry and dull to say the least, so here are some fun activities to liven things up a little, and help kids to remember spellings...

Try these fun activities:

1. STAIRCASE

Write the spelling words as a staircase and add one letter at a time as if they are stairs. For example:

S

Sl

Sli

Slip

2. ON THE OTHER HAND

If your child is right handed, get them to write their spelling words with their left hand. If they are left handed, write their spellings with their right hand.

3. SPELLING WITH FLOWERS

Ask your child to draw a large colourful flower with X amount of petals. On each of the petals they will write one of their spelling words.

4. TIMES THREE

Get your child to write their spellings three times over. First they write the word in a coloured pencil of their choice, then they write the same word in crayon, thirdly they write the word in pen.

5. LOOK, SAY, COVER, WRITE, CHECK (We HAD to throw that one in somewhere!)

The 'look, say, cover, write and check' method is a great way to help your child remember difficult spellings.

6. HEADLINER

Give your child a bundle of suitable magazines or comics and let them cut out the words they will need to spell each word. Then stick onto a piece of paper or make your own home spelling book.

 7. DOTTY WORDS

Write the spellings in dots and give your child a coloured pencil to join the dots. 8. GET STAMPING Give your child access to an ink pad and a set of alphabet stamp letters. Let them look at the word and then stamp it out on their own.
